Short sales give distressed homeowners an exit that doesn’t lead through credit-damaging foreclosure and save banks money compared with taking and selling houses with failed mortgages. So at the urging of the National Association of Realtors, the U.S. Treasury Department came up with a new program to encourage short sales.

Market Update
MBS prices are down -5/32 (FNMA 30-yr 4.5 at 101.10), above 9:45 et pricing of -8/32. The big news from Europe knocked MBS markets lower early, and then it was a relatively quiet session. Investors evaluated the $1 trillion EU aid package and generally liked what they saw, while waiting for further details. The stock market held its early gains and the Dow is up 400 points. No economic data will be released tomorrow. There will be a 3-yr Treasury auction at 1:00 et.
